New Year, FRESH Closet

Back to the grind and back to my favorite speech about starting the year with a CLEAN closet!! Have you missed me?! As always, I think it is important to start a new year with a fresh mindset, and a tidied home. I of course go to the extreme with cleaning every nook and cranny… But the most important of them all, is the closet!

After the last two years of unpredictability, worry, and utter chaos (is that just me) we have all had, this year's closet clean out is more chatharitc than ever. We all have a new style, all our bodies have seemed to change in one way or another, and we are all in a new frame of mind.

So as you start to head into the depths of your clothing, take some of my old rules with a new twist and see how they work for you:

Clean Out Your Entire Wardrobe: This used to always pertain to your undergarments and various coat closets around the house. But now, more than ever, we are stashing lounge wear in places it does not belong!! Or really just anywhere because we have been living in it for two years! For this closet clean out be really honest with yourself about how many you need to keep, and start thinking about transitioning back into other outfit choices.

Get into the right mindset: The right mindset is coming from a “let’s do this” positive attitude that is honest and realistic with the items in your closet. This one will never change for me, but this year especially is a time to take moments for yourself. Let your closet clean out be one of them. Give yourself the time to do it (as I always say, BOOK the appointment, don’t clean “when you have a moment”) and really let yourself enjoy the process. Even if it isn’t your favorite thing to do, take each piece you are keeping and imagine for a second what fun things you can do with it and in it the next year.

Donate/Consign/Mend/Maybe-Pull your clothes out of your closet into 4 piles on your bed.  These are the pieces that you have decided to remove from your closet.

Donate: These pieces aren’t “consign worthy”.

Consign: These pieces don’t work for you anymore but you can potentially make some money on them.

Mend: Look for pieces that have stains, holes, buttons missing or need to be mended in some way.

Maybe: These are the pieces you aren’t 100% sure should be removed.  If you are the fence, put them in this pile.  Then once you have gone through the whole process come back to decide on if you want to remove these.

Rule Of Thumb: This is one of my tried and trues. I always tell clients if they are unsure of an item to give it one more season. But this year, I’m going to challenge you all! Have you been giving that item one more season time and time again? It’s time to really buckle down and say YES or NO to items you aren’t sure still fit your style and life.

Move those Items Out: And what do you do once you have all these items ready to get rid of?  Here are my top picks for consigning items:

Happy cleaning! And may your new year be THE BEST YET!!

With LOVE and grace,

Elizabeth
