LOVE Yourself: Betty Schuman

I GOT IT FROM MY MOMMA!  That’s the first thing that comes to mind as I sit down to right about my momma.  SO much goodness that I have adopted over the years I learned from my momma.  Fashion (of course!!!), health/wellness, movement, positive mindset, family traditions and I could go on and on forever.  For those of you that actually know my mother, you know the beauty that she exudes from the inside out is SO genuine.  For those of you that don’t know her, let me explain.  My mother is a retired school counselor that has always taught me to break down people’s actions to the root cause.  There is something so much deeper to what people share with us then what is on the outside.  She encouraged me to really see people deep into their souls.  And when you can see people deeper than what they put out into the world, that’s where the beautiful human connection magic happens!

So while I think that my mother is absolutely beautiful, her true beauty SHINES through her wonderfully positive characteristics that make her authentically herself.   This mindset of really knowing people and what makes them so unique I personally feel is instrumental in the work I do as a wardrobe consultant.  Fashion is just a tool of expression and my momma taught me how to use this tool to build our CONFIDENCE and really feel great about yourself.

This LOVE Yourself feature is looooooonnnng overdue, but perfect timing at the same time.  Mother’s day is this Sunday and it’s such a special time for me to be able to celebrate my momma, my Tita, my journey as a mother myself and all the other special momma’s in my life.  It’s fitting to share my mother’s LOVE Yourself journey as mother’s day approaches this weekend.  She truly taught me to LOVE myself and I want to pass on this goodness to each of YOU.

1.What does LOVE yourself mean to you?

To me, “Love Yourself” means being at peace with yourself, knowing and understanding that we are all “a work in progress”. I believe that if there is something you do not “love” about yourself, you have all the power to make changes.

2.Did you have a someone that exuded a positive body image for you growing up?  A family member, friend, mentor, etc.

My mother definitely had a neutral mindset about body image, always focusing on health rather than size or shape.  Other than my mother, my Aunt Julia influenced me greatly.  She had a strong sense of self, and a belief that healthy eating and exercise were very important.  She would talk to me about this, always encouraging me to form good habits and to be mindful about a healthy body.

3.Do you tear your body apart vocally?

I certainly use to vocalize things that I did not like about my body, but I really do not do that anymore. That is one of those things that I have worked on improving.

4. Are you working to improve your mindset around body image or is it a neutral mindset for you?

I am definitely always working to improve my mindset around body image, but the focus for me now is about having a healthy and strong body.

5.Do you have anyone that you are trying to set a healthy example for?

Absolutley, my grandchildren!  I spent many years trying to set healthy examples for my children, and now my children are setting healthy examples for their kids.  It certainly warms my heart to see this legacy passed on.

with LOVE and grace,
