Clean Your Closet

Are you in the middle of cleaning out your closet and just a little confused as to where to go next? The start of each year always brings the start of new things and exciting beginnings, especially and hopefully in the year 2021! Of course that doesn’t come without a little bit of chaos, and in this case it usually has to do with the pile of clothes you just aren’t sure if you should keep or give up on. Here are some of my top tips to keep in mind when you start to clean your closet this year:

Not Just A One Time Thing: cleaning out your closet shouldn’t be a one time thing. I recommend that you do it twice a year.  I suggest cleaning out your closet every February and August to keep a good routine and make sure that you stay on point with the things you’ve gotten rid of and the new things that you need to purchase.

Block Out The Time: this is such a major thing! So many people don’t understand just how long it’s gonna take to clean out your closet, including myself sometimes! I urge clients to never give themselves less than two hour time blocks when they start on the closet clean out.

Pump Yourself Up: this is more of a fun and silly tip! I love to pump myself up while doing such a strenuous emotional job as cleaning out your closet.  I always suggest to put on your favorite music, dance around a little bit, and get PUMPED about your closet project.

Don’t Forget The Sentiment: for sentimental items like a wedding dress or special occasion gown, I suggest taking those out of your main closet. This helps free up space and also gives you the ability to separate the two things. You’re not gonna wear those gowns and dresses on a daily basis, so it’s better to store these items outside of your closet.

Rule Of Thumb: If you are on the fence about an item and really just can’t decide if it’s the best thing to give it up or keep it, I recommend keeping it for one more season! The next time you go to clean out your closet ask yourself on that specific item if you wore it in that timeframe. If you didn’t, then it’s time to give it up.  If you did, maybe you found a new way to wear an old piece!

Move those Items Out: And what do you do once you have all these items ready to get rid of?  Here are my top picks for consigning items:

Along with this, I always urge clients to get out their donation items as quickly as possible. Not only is it a burden to have those bags in your home but it gives you the option to make second choices out of things you’ve already given your final decisions too.  If you don’t want to take the time to consign, I recommend donating your items.  Put those bags in the back of your car immediately and drop them at a Goodwill (or whatever your favorite charity/donation center) the next time you’re out and about! It will give you a clean mind and a clean slate to start your new year with your new clean closet!

With LOVE and grace,

Elizabeth
