LOVE YOURSELF - Bethany Walker
About 15 years ago, this beautiful dear soul came into my life as she started dating my brother. Bethany has been such a breath of fresh air and so fun from the day I met her. And still is today! She had this youthful way about her but yet was an old soul. I’m not sure why, but I always gravitate towards old souls. Bethany is a great example that you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover…she’s this cute petite person that looks like she could be a teenager, but yet she’s wise beyond her years. Once you get into a deep conversation with her, you quickly learn how sharp and knowledgeable she is. She is kind, quick on her feet, makes everyone feel welcomed, constantly working on improving herself and is extremely loyal. I count my blessings to have in my life and be part of my family!!!!
1.What does LOVEyourself mean to you?
LOVEyourself isn’t something you feel, it is something you do and I am constantly working to find ways to love myself as I evolve over time. It isn’t always what your body looks like but more about freedom to move your body however you want, doing the things that bring you joy, making decisions that are true to yourself, and feeling comfortable in your body everyday. ITS WORK!
2.Did you have a someone that exuded a positive body image for you growing up? A family member, friend, mentor, etc.
Growing up, I don’t recall anyone particularly exuding a positive body image for me to attach. I probably have more of an unorthodox experience than most. While I had a great upbringing in a lot of ways, there were challenges that help defined me. Because I grew up in a dysfunctional atmosphere with emotional chaos, I matured quickly, developing my own personal autonomy. As a 12 year old, I was creating my own values, setting my own boundaries, making my own decisions, and separating others influences on me. I think this self determination mindset has spilled over into the way I view my body; cautious, honest, deliberate.
3.Do you tear your body apart vocally?
I do not typically tear my body apart vocally. Although we are our own worst critic, especially in our heads. I try my best to focus on things I can control, such as eating clean, working out, breath work, meditation, prayer, etc. These practices help me channel any negative energy from spiraling.
4.Are you working to improve your mindset around body image or is it a neutral mindset for you?
I feel like there is always room to improve and grow. Sometimes, easier said than done, but using positive affirmations, pep talks, and offering myself the same compassionate talks as I would to my daughters and friends have been helpful.
5.Do you have anyone that you are trying to set a healthy example for?
My 2 daughters and 6 young nieces. Modeling acceptance is my best practice that I can demonstrate for them. Everyones journey is different and while we all have highs and lows, it is important to know that we are all a work in progress. Ultimately focusing on the core value that their worth is not determined by their physical appearance!!
