Austin Style in the Summer
Two things are true in Austin - Our summers are HOT, and our style is defined. More and more I have clients coming to me to find their “Austin Look”. You know the one - casually put together. Purposefully unmade. It’s a way of saying you belong here without having to speak a word. To master it is like eating a pound of BBQ in one sitting and then still having room for apple pie!
So, what is a woman to do when the sun starts beating down and her jeans are sticking?? I’m here to tell you just how to master the Austin Look in the scorching months we have ahead:
Fabric - I put this first because all in all it might just be the MOST important. If you are going to survive the Austin heat you have to learn how to scope out a good light weight fabric. There is something so beautiful about a woman in the Hamptons in her button downs, but that is not for here. Stick to light cotton, stick to linen, and don’t be scared to ditch the denim!
Color - You are in Austin now. So trying hard is hardly something we do. Which in turn often bodes the questions… Where do we land on the color wheel? I LOVE color, and I don’t like to tell others to shy away from it. Especially in a world where black is such an easy go to. But I understand not wanting to attract even more rays by what you wear. Sticking to more neutral colors is great! And adding in small swatches of a brighter pop can really pull an outfit together.
Pieces - As I said earlier, the thought of throwing on a jean in the height of the heat can honestly make one want to faint. And I don’t blame them!! So, in order to survive, and still look like you put the “Austin Cool” touch on your wardrobe - I always suggest more breathable approaches like a cotton dress with a button down tied around the waist. Or a skirt and chiffon top/tank. Mix and match until you find combinations you feel more comfortable in (both temp and style wise).
Now that you have the basis of how to dress in this lovely little city of ours, I hope you go out with CONFIDENCE to your next concert or dinner downtown!
With LOVE and grace,
Elizabeth
